Maximise the Rewards of Jumu’ah

It’s Jumu’ah! The most blessed day of the week.

Below are some of the Aadaab of Jumu’ah we can follow to try and maximise the rewards inshallah.

jumu'ah2.jpg

  • Start preparing for Jumu’ah from Thursday Maghrib time by performing the Sunan al-Fitrah (Muslim’s cleanliness obligations) from clipping the nails, removing hair from armpits and removing pubic hair [Ihya aul-Uloom]
  • Perform Ghusl according to the Sunnah

The Prophet Muhammad (ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him)) said: “Any man who performs Ghusl on Friday, perfumes himself if he has perfume, wears the best of his clothes, then goes to the Masjid and offers as many prayers as he wishes while not harming anybody, then listens quietly while the Imaam speaks until he offers the prayer, will have all his sins between that Friday and the next forgiven.” [Al-Bukhaari].

  • Brush the teeth with Miswaak [Ibid]

On one Friday, the Prophet Muhammad (ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him)) said: “O Muslims! Allah Ta’ala has made this day a day of Eid. So have a bath on this day, whoever has perfume should apply it, and use the Miswaak.” [Ibn Majah]

  • Use Attar (Perfume) [Ibid]
  • Wear nice and clean clothes [Abu Dawood]
  • Pray Salaat al-Jumu’ah

“O you who believe (Muslims)! When the call is proclaimed for the Salah (prayer) on Friday (Jumu‘ah prayer), come to the remembrance of Allah [Jumu‘ah religious talk (Khutbah) and Salah (prayer)] and leave off business (and every other thing). That is better for you if you did but know!” [Surah Al-Jumu’ah 62:9]

  • Go early to the Masjid for Jumu’ah. The earlier a person goes, the more reward he will receive.

The Prophet Muhammad (ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him)) said: “On the day of Jumu’ah, the angels stand at the entrance of that Masjid in which Salaat al-Jumu’ah is to be offered. They write down the name of the person who enters the Masjid first, and thereafter the name of the person who follows, and they continue doing this. The person who entered first will receive the reward of sacrificing a camel in the path of Allah; the one who followed him will get the reward of sacrificing a cow, thereafter a chicken, thereafter the reward of giving an egg as charity in the path of Allah. Once the khutbah commences, the angels close the register and begin listening to the khutbah. ” [Bukhari and Muslim]

  • Go to the Masjid on foot (if within walking distance). By walking to the Masjid a person gets the reward of fasting for one year for every step that he takes.

The Prophet Muhammad (ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him)) said: “Whoever does Ghusl on Friday and causes (his wife) to do Ghusl, and sets out early, and comes close to the Imaam and listens and keeps quiet, for every step he takes he will have the reward of fasting and praying qiyaam for one year.” [Tirmidhi]

  • Listen very attentively to the khutbah and not fiddle with clothes or fingers [Ibn Majah]
  • Sit as close as possible to the Imaam. [Ibn Majah, Tirmidhi]
  • Recite Surat al-Kahf  (at least first and last ten verses if short on time)

“Whoever recites Surat al-Kahf on Friday, a light shall shine forth for him between the two Fridays.” [Ibn Hajar]

  • Recite Durood abundantly

The Prophet Muhammad (ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him)) said: “Recite Durood upon me in abundance on the day of Jumu’ah since they are presented to me.” [Ibn Majah]

  • Make lots of Dua on Jumu’ah especially during Sa’at al Istijabah which is an hour before Maghrib on Friday during which all supplications are accepted.

The Prophet Muhammad (ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him)) said: “There is such an hour on Friday that if any Muslim makes dua in it, his dua will definitely be accepted.” [Bukhari, Muslim]

May Allah keep us guided and on the straight path and give us the ability to act upon all of these deeds and Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him)).  Ameen.

The Master Supplication of Seeking Forgiveness

This post shares how we can repent for our sins by reciting the Master Supplication of Seeking Forgiveness (Sayyid al-Istighfar) every morning and every evening.

The Prophet Muhammad (ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him)) said: “The (Sayyid al-Istighfar) most superior way of asking for forgiveness from Allah is to say (the dua below). Whosoever recites it during the day with firm faith in it, and dies on the same day before the evening, he will be from the people of Jannah; and whosoever recites it at night with firm faith in it, and dies before the morning, he will be from the people of Jannah.”

“O Allah! You are my Lord! None has the right to be worshipped but You. You created me and I am Your slave, and I am faithful to my covenant and my promise as much as I can. I seek refuge with You from all the evil I have done. I acknowledge before You all the blessings You have bestowed upon me, and I confess to You all my sins. So I entreat You to forgive my sins, for nobody can forgive sins except You”

Preparation for Umrah

Umrah is an expiation for the sins committed between it and the previous Umrah; and the reward of Hajj Mabrur (i.e. one accepted) is nothing but Jannah. [Sahih al-Bukhari]

Alhamdulillah I was blessed to perform Umrah recently and visit Makkah and Madinah for the first time. Inshallah this post aims to share some advice and guidance about preparing for Umrah, a spiritual journey of a lifetime.

Below are lists of things to consider and do.

    • The rules of Ihram
    • How to perform Tawaf

“I respond to Your call, O Allah (subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He)) I respond to Your call. I respond to Your call, You have no partner. I respond to Your call. Indeed, the praise and grace are yours as well as sovereignty. You have no partner.”

  • Learn the Fardh and Sunnah requirements for Wudhu and how to pray Tahiyyat-ul-Wudhu

Any one who performs the ablution perfectly and then offers 2 rak’ahs of prayers concentrating on them with his heart and face, paradise will necessarily fall to his lot. [Sunan Abu Dawud]

  • Learn the Fardh and Sunnah requirements for Salah

The Prophet Muhammad (ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him)) said: “Prayer in this masjid of mine is superior to a thousand prayers elsewhere, except for Masjid al-Haram, and prayer in Masjid al-Haram is superior to one hundred thousand prayers elsewhere.” [Ahmad and ibn Majah]

It is important that prayers are performed correctly in order to maximise the reward.

  • How to pray Salaat-al-Jamaa’ah (Salah in Congregration) and the Etiquettes of praying in a Mosque including how to pray Tahiyyat-ul-Masjid

The Prophet Muhammad (ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him)) said: “Prayer in congregation is superior to praying individually twenty-seven times.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

He also said: “Allah will prepare for him who goes to the mosque (every) morning and in the afternoon (for the congregational prayer) an honorable place in Paradise…” [Sahih Bukhaari]

  • How to perform Salat al-Janazah (Funeral prayer)

The Prophet Muhammad (ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him)) said: “Whosoever attends the funeral of a Muslim believing and hoping for the reward from Allah (subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He)) and remains with it until the prayer is offered over it and the burial is completed, he will return with a reward of two Qirat; each Qirat is equivalent to Mount Uhud; and whosoever offers his prayer over it and returns before its burial, he will come back with one Qirat.”
[Al-Bukhari]

There is a Janazah after each Fardh Salah therefore take the opportunity to gain the extra reward. After each Fardh Salah do Dhikr and Istighfaar and wait for the Janazah Salah to start rather than rushing to perform the Sunnah and Nafl prayers.

Spiritual Things to Do

  • Perform the 5 daily Salah on time and with khushoo (sincerity and concentration) including the Sunnah and Nafl prayers

“The first of man’s deeds for which he will be called to account on the Day of Resurrection will be Salah. If it is found to be perfect, he will be safe and successful; but if it is incomplete, he will be unfortunate and a loser. If any shortcoming is found in the obligatory Salah, the Glorious and Exalted Rabb will command to see whether His slave has offered any voluntary Salah so that the obligatory Salah may be made up by it.” [At-Tirmidhi]

The Prophet Muhammad (ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him)) said: “Whoever persists in performing twelve rak’ah from the Sunnah, a house will be built for him in Paradise: four before the Dhuhr, two Rak’ah after Dhuhr, two Rak’ah after Maghrib, two Rak’ah after the Isha and two Rak’ah before Fajr.” [Sunan Ibn Majah]

  • Make Dhikr and Istighfaar (seek Allah’s (subḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He)) pleasure and forgiveness)
  • Practice Sabr (patience) and humility
  • Recite the Quran and reflect on the meaning
  • Organise your Dua list. Make a list of Duas you want to make including the requests you receive from family and friends
  • Make a list of goals you wish to achieve whilst on Umrah e.g. number of chapters to read from the Quran, the number of Nafl Tawafs to perform, the extra Nafl and Sunnah prayers you want to perform, any Sadaqah (charity) you want to give
  • Purify your heart, what you eat, what you say, what you see and hear
